Walls, normally anonymous and private, have the potential to become urban landmarks. This project focuses on the façade of Charlot Square in the Verdun neighborhood, Nou Barris district, and aims not only to improve the building’s performance but also
to activate and enrich the community life of the square.
This intervention reimagines the façade as a multifunctional theater, where the levels are transformed into a vertical and large scenography A that allows for various community activities. This façade-stage not only elevates and frames the square’s space but also invites citizens to actively participate in neighborhood life. The horizontal metal tubular structures B, hanging textiles C, and flexible-deployable furniture D stored within the façade itself allow the wall and square to be adapted to different events, from theater performances and group exercise activities to
neighborhood notices and film screenings. In this way, the architectural intervention creates a dynamic and versatile space that addresses the community’s needs for leisure, entertainment, and cultural activation.
In line with the contest’s sustainability goals, this proposal includes the constructive and thermal improvement of the façade. New openings with balconies E will be created to enhance the lighting and ventilation of interior spaces, particularly the offices facing the square. Additionally, the integration of vertical vegetation F and solar panels G contributes to the production of renewable energy and the creation of a more pleasant microclimate. These interventions not only benefit the building’s users but also promote a healthier and more sustainable urban environment, in
accordance with the 2030 Agenda’s goals, such as SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy).
Furthermore, this project seeks to blur the boundaries between public and private spaces by integrating the building’s façade with the square’s life, for this, the balconies and new openings allow residents and building users to interact with the scenic activities H, occasionally becoming actors and spectators. This interaction fosters a sense of community and belonging, transforming the wall and the square into a focal point for recreational and cultural activities in the public space.
The ”Total theater: new public scenographies” project exemplifies how an architectural intervention can transcend its original function to become a catalyst for urban and social change. By transforming a wall into an active and participatory element, an underutilized public space is revitalized, enhancing social cohesion and sustainability. This proposal not only meets the contest’s objectives and criteria but also introduces a new architectural concept that benefits both the building’s inhabitants and the community at large, reaffirming the role of architecture in creating
